4th Brentwood Bank Holiday ECF Rapid Play Tournament

It was truly an amazing day, with many young chess players competing against older, more experienced opponents. The event was wonderfully organised – everything ran smoothly from start to finish. The venue itself was excellent, offering a wide range of activities and things to do, which made the day even more enjoyable for everyone involved.

My name is Maansi – 7 years old, and I am going into Year 3 at Brentwood Prep. I love playing chess. I started playing chess inspired by my elder brother Maadesh.

I played the Minor section, along with some of my friends. In this tournament, I played against 6 players, all much older children. In the last game I played against a much stronger player – I thought I was going to lose against him, but somehow managed to win. Playing this tournament has got my performance ratings up.

I won a surprise medal in the prizegiving ceremony, for my good performance. The medal motivates me to perform more better. I had loads of fun with friends that day. I want to play more tournaments and win more games, and win more medals/cups.

The summer tournament at Brentwood School this year was a fun and thrilling experience, just like all the previous times. It was well-planned and executed, with rounds starting on time and helpful arbiters who solved all the problems that arose in games.

The venue had many spaces for parents and people who finished their games to sit at. This allowed players to refresh for the upcoming round.
I was playing in the Open section for all above 1200 ECF. Despite an unfortunate loss in my first game, I was able to strike back with a respectable win and draw against players who normally do better than me.

All people were keeping a positive attitude no matter how many points they got, as this tournament wasn’t all about winning. It is also about making connections with people you don’t normally see, and most importantly having fun.

During the second half of the tournament, our chess brains were getting a bit worn out, but we kept on pushing. After the sixth round we were exhausted, not just from the chess games but also from the fun we had hanging out with other chess players and friends.

During prizegiving I was very joyful, as I had managed to get the under 1400 rating prize.

Overall, this tournament was unforgettable thanks to my friends/fellow chess players, and I look forward to playing in it next year.
